this is really the cincher. you hear of people who lose their handphones right? well, i lost my charger. its like, wtf man, right? so i have a phone, but i can't bloody use it. and cause its samsung, not many people have the charger. so im kinda on-and-off contactable on the mobile, depending on who is charitable enough to let me slide my sim into their phone for moments here and there.
when did the concept of owning a phone become ubiquitous? i spelled that wrong didn't i. anyway. yeah. when the fuck? maybe we should all throw our phones away. maybe we will be happier. or at least, we will be more at ease with ourselves, i think.
just brewed a new batch of beer. its supposed to be a kilkenny-clone kinda brew, but then again... we all know 'supposed to' rarely ever comes out as it is.

going against popular opinion, because that makes me feel special, i will raise my hand and say that Adore was the Pumpkins best album. Second would be Gish. then Mellon Collie, siamese dreams, pisces iscariot, and finally deux ex machina. discounting of course the box releases, because we all know thats just for coins in the coffer. do you need my reasons?
full metal jacket was a let down. cinematic masterpiece my ass. sure there were striking scenes that were kick ass, but the whole movie seemed to spiral out of its central theme and become more of a collection of shorts. clap clap for kubric in that respect, holding the rein in at the very damn edge. so its either his genius, or his tomfoolery. but lets not split hairs.
platoon was a more enjoyable movie, but apocalyse now, though a bit tough at times, sears itself into my memories. i will do a tribute, because thats the closest i'll come to. at this point in time.
its very late and im not sure why im blogging, but i seem to be fighting back sleep for some inexplicable reason. in cursed ubin island, all i wanted was my comfortable bed back home. and now, im delaying that very moment i yearned for so much. well. anticipation was always the better of the two.
i wish. i wish i had a movie room! i recall when i was a kid and i loved staying at one of my cousins house because he had one of those rooms set aside specifically for movies, you know, with the big big speakers and super big screen. and i recall i loved watching that la bamba movie on it, cause it was one of my favourites. and i loved to sing karaoke too- 'i'm on the top of the world....' and a hot air balloon would float across the screen. the shag carpet was tan colour with a few dark stains from coke and other miscelleaneous misdemeanours. it was a very safe room. it was like a hug.
sigh. yippie yai yay i'm back.

The junior cadets have come in and brought with them the phenomenon of the Tekong Shit. for the NS-uninitiated out there, let me tell you out and out- Tekong Shit is no joke. It clogs toilets and reeks like satan's armpit. For some strange reason, recruits having just left tekong have shit that is the consistency of adamantium, which we all know is the strongest metal on earth. So now, since we share the toilet with the juniors and having once been a junior, i can from first hand experience tell you that by the end of this coming week, only 1 cubicle out of the 12 we have will be working. the rest will be clogged with shit. Already, its only been one week and they've bombed 4 cubicles out of action. Shitting now has become a game of russian roulette, the 'mystery door'. What will i find behind this door? a shit splattered hell hole or a haven of white porcelain waiting for me to deposit my faeces.
how does one draw music?

i hereby declare Waterloo Sunset as the best song of the past millenium. It is melancholy in a nutshell and it is the hope of happiness so tangible. 'as long as i gaze on/ waterloo sunset/ i am in paradise'. Fuck the stones and the beatles and the who. okay maybe not the beatles. but fuck the other two bands. kinks baby. kinks.
please please please do me a favour, open kazaa, imesh, napster or whatever program of piracy you are using at the moment and in the search bar, type the following- 'the kinks waterloo sunset' and if you're feeling generous, 'the magnetic fields sunset city' and send that song to me, cause i can't seem to find a working version on my P2P network.

in classic singaporean kiasu-ness, and with the recent spate of PMS-ing weather going from sunny to rainy then to rainy AND sunny, i decided to bring more underwear into camp i run out of fresh underwear. and as a contingency, i brought even more underwear in case in some freak occurance some underwear goes missing. and for the final nail in the coffin, i thought 'what the hell' and just packed in even more underwear.
and so now its the weekend and i'm back and home and i'm feeling great, except for the fact that i have no underwear to wear.
-
last night the rj fuckers came over to do what we do best, which is to drink, and now smoking has been added to our list of talents. as usual, jlum was his camel self and downed whiskey after vodka after whiskey and still was sober enough to tend to the drunkards.
in classic scholarly logic, since most of them had to be home early for various commitments they had the next morning, we hit the 'fast forward' button on the night and by 930 isaac was already stoned and tzi spouting shit out of his mouth like the foul bastard he is. panadol and alcohol is not the magic stoner combination we thought it was. quote of the night? courtesy tzi- 'YOU SACK OF TITTTIESS! SACK'A TITSSSS!!!!'
isaac hurled like out of the exorcist and my ash tray was totally pack full of cigarette butts. sure signs of a killer night.

superficially i think the appeal of Belle & Sebastian is in their seemingly innocent tunes and ditties, and the singers airy sing-song voice, remiscient of a by-gone time. and ominous lyrics, in stark contrast to the tune, serves as salvation from mindless pop-happy songs.
however, there is more to them. they are the embodiment of a fairy tale. Seriously. Think about it, they are deceptively simple and straightforward, and they spin tales about them. Each album sleeve comes with a simple story, tho ficticious, is still beautiful. It enhances one's enjoyment of their songs because the band becomes bigger than themselves, if you get what i mean. i guess this sums them up, from 'If you're feeling sinister' album- 'play a song to set me free/ nobody writes them like they used to/ so it may as well be me'

i can scarcely believe myself. last night i went to pre-rouge with some friends and it seemed to be well, a lost night. lost in the sense we all know- thats its too late to start anything, too early to call it a night, and the moods too tragic-mellow to enjoy the nothingness of it all. and this guy came up and told us to go up to rouge and gave us all red bands to wear on our wrists. no its not some hollywood fad 'i support cancer/aids/bird flu research' kinda thing. it was... a magic red band. if you have the red band and go to the bar anytime before 1am, they give you a free beer! can you believe how powerful it is? if it were a magic card, it'd have a fucking 12 mana casting cost or something like that. and we got it for free! you can imagine the paradise i was in. after one when the free flow ended, i have no idea what the fuck rouge was thinking, but they gave us a free jug of beer. I drank so much damn beer, the next morning my piss smelled of beer.
hmm. maybe its a new form of buisness marketing, where they take the moral highground and walk away 'spiritually fulfilled' through their generosity.
god bless you rouge.

okay so re-reading my previous post, i think its terrible. absolutely terrible. i guess i would call it a heroic, or idiotic, attempt because only someone so brave (or stupid) would post such a badly phrased entry. i thought i had an interesting idea for a post and i guess with a bit more time i could make something more decent of it but i've neither the time nor the talent to so i'll do what most modern writers do and write an entry that is 'inspired', when the actual word should actually be 'plagarized'.
anyway, below is a text i wrote 'inspired' from T.S. Elliot's 'The Wasteland'.*
What are the roots that clutch, what branches grow
Out of this stony rubbish? Son of man
You cannot say, or guess, for you know only
A heap of broken images, where the sun beats,
And the deal tree gives no shelter, the cricket no relief,
And the dry stone no sound of water. Only
There is a shadow under this red rock,
(Come in under the shadow of this red rock),
And I will show you something different from either
Your shadow at morning striding behind you
Or your shadow at evening rising to meet you;
I will show you fear in a handful of dust.
Frisch weht der Wind
Der Heimat zu.
Mein Irisch Kind,
Wo weilest du?
"You gave me hyacinths first a year ago;
"They called me the hyacinth girl."
-Yet when e came back, late, from the Hyacinth garden,
Your arms full, and your hair wet, I could not
Speak, and my eyes failed, I was neither
Living nor dead, and I knew nothing,
Looking into the heart of light, the silence.
Oed' und leer das Meer.
i feel so much better now.

OK so its like, Harold and Kumar Go To White Castle, and while I am neither Harold nor Kumar, and neither is there a White Castle in Singapore, and so the similarty between that movie and my day today is that we both 'Go To' a place.
In my case, its Lennard and His Bag* Go To Pek Kio Kopitiam.
(*for lack of another character)
See? we are both on a quest for food. let me elaborate-
'Harold : I want that.
Kumar : What? A Hot Dog Heaven chili cheese dog?
Harold : No. The feeling a man gets when he gets exactly what he desires.
Kumar : You mean...
Harold : We have to go to White Castle'
the difference being, of course, was that i had to go to Pek Kio Kopitiam, where the food is cheap and the Sweet and Sour Pork is oh so sweet, and sour, and porky... I mean, if you want to nit pick, there are many other differences between the movie and my day as i did not hang-glide or smoke pot or touch a man's wife's tits, and their journey was a convulted adventure whereas mine was a 10 min bus ride on 890, but but but, if you distill it, at its very essence, those elements served to heighten the 'excitement' of the day, and (lo and behold) i TOO had 'excitement heightening' experiences too in my journey to pek kio.
for example- i almost tripped on a step. after buying my meal. not exciting enough? well, after buying my da-bao meal, i went to the near-by al-ameen to get a drink, and heh heh heh if those muslims found out i had in my plastic bag a packed meal of pork, oh my. it would be a call for jihad bigger than 9-11.
'Live on The Edge (c)', thats my motto.
back to camp tomorrow night after this lovely 2 week hiatus. g'bye.

i was thinking about all this creative arty jazz, you know what i mean, the need to 'express' myself and yada yada and generally what is traditionally associated with the arty folk of which i am sometimes thought of, and i was thinking about why is it i like art so much and why i took to it so strongly.
on further introspection, i find i just as much enjoy putting together an outfit to wear as much as drawing a picture, and while it may be a satisfaction on a different level, it still curbs some basic hunger within me, like an itch you can't really scratch and you itch, its just you don't know where.
so i was peeing at rox's place (the toilet is a very conductive place for thought. think of archimedes man.), and it struck me! like a bolt of lightning! the reason i like it so much (drum roll) is because of the control i get over it. basically, there aren't really any rules and you can just go as your whim dictactes, and theres no 2nd or 3rd party you have to think about. its just you, and what you want. which re-affirms that i guess i am selfish, but hey, at least i don't (i hope) overly impose it on anyone anyway.
and i have gained a greater level of self awareness. if this were Final Fantasy, the level up tune would be playing now.

don't think me a retard but i can't find the people who added me to MSN messenger. as in, their contacts don't show on my list. so ho hum oh well jst try send me a MSN msg and if it goes thru then all's well that ends well if not i'm not much worse than where i was prior to this.
and i was thinking about NS and how people say i've a jackpot posting and how i still sometimes whine about it, and i was thinking perhaps i'm being very selfish or overly self indulgent but on second third and fourth thoughts, i figured that the shitty thing about NS is not so much your posting, tho it is a factor, but the fact that you're doing what you don't really wanna do for 2 years. and thats the part that gets most people down, the thought of 'what if', as in, specfically, 'what if i wasn't serving NS now...' and our thoughts would drift to that of acadamia, or bumming and slumming, or living it up.
but no one thinks- 'what if i weren't serving NS now? gosh. i'd be so sad and lost. i wouldn't know what to do.'

okay so im technologically lagging and i JUST only started using MSN messenger but in my defence i will say that i've been using a MAC, so hence my microsoft-related ignorance. now my MSN contact list is well, dismal to say the least, currently at full strength of 1 grand contact courtesy of tiffany, so add me then. lennard_ong@yahoo.com

when my team leader called and told me to wear civilians to duty cause we were going to do an ambush, i was really damn excited. when we got to strap the pistols to our ankles, i was pissing in my pants with anticipation for the night. then came the briefing. we were doing an ambush for a bicycle thief. take the excitement down a notch. and we spent the night camped at some HDB void deck keeping eye on a bicycle some dist away. and what a bore it was. we caught an old man peeing in the void deck. that's about it.
seems everyone's leaving now. yishi, such, stef, rox, and bla bla the list goes on. when NS is over and the boys go, it'll be around this time of the year too. what an allusion to migratory birds and the seasons of migration. time to fly the coop and spread our wings baby, though some of us make take longer than others.
which brings me to the fact that im studying locally so i thought i might as well get to know what this country actually is about. i wanted to buy this book on politics in singapore and shit like that, so when i rifled thru it, i chanced upon a section on the speakers corner- "a world renowned area for free speech". and i put the book down s-l-o-w-l-y, and took and step back, before turn 180 and running away, hopefully all the way to another nation, but unfortunately only as far as a few steps.

you know hows theres a daily body clock? well there's also a yearly body clock, i realized, and its sync-ed to the school year. that why its now august but i still feel like its only jan or feb. traditionally, june would feel like june because it was when we had that glorious one month break. and august would feel like august because you had to mug. but now, without school, it seems like the year has gotten all wonky. maybe thats why there's the phrase 'young at heart', because adults, having no more school, don't realize the years passing.

now NDP is over and attachment has started i am filled with a freedom fuelled joy which makes me want to stand atop a mountain, or in the context of heartland singapore, atop a HDP flat and bawl out a huge great YAWP. YAWP.
With ALOT more free time, its not as if I'm doing anything especially significant, but what i enjoy is the leisurely pace at which i can now do my things. i am brewing a new batch of beer and its fermenting in my room and its very comforting to wake in the middle of the night gripped in the fear of 'SHIT WHAT TIME DO I HAVE TO REPORT TOMORROW TO CAMP?!' only to remember that 'ahhhh... i'm in attachment.... no need to go to camp...' and hear my beer fermenter blubs reassuringly.
listening to Queen, KISS, Led Zep and the gamut of classic bands, i am gripped with despair. I am never to watch their concerts, to experience first hand their magic. Of the Rock Opera, and the Camp Glam and the Rock Maestro. Sure Robert Smith and the Cure are still at it but thats different. They're past their prime and robert smith doesn't cut it so much anymore, and its just not the same! And i want to conk myself on the head for missing the recent rolling stones concert. i feel like a spaceman from the 70s/80s because 2004 isn't very me. (it isn't very anyone at that too, might i add.) and i'm not joking when i say the thought of what their concerts might have been like brings a tear to my eye.
jireh was right when he said my blog is dying and i know that and quite frankly now i don't mind so much and its back to more of writing for myself. it'd suit me fine if no one reads this. this is, afterall, a wasteland.
god gave rock and roll to you, gave rock and roll to you, gave it to everyone
god gave rock and roll to you, gave rock and roll to you, put it in the soul of everyone.

haven't blogged in a while, but theres much to write now. granted its much ado about nothing, but isn't that the case usually? much ado about nothing.
isaac called me last night and asked where was nice to chill out and i said 'hey why not go to ice cold beer' and he say 'hey why not?' so i assumed he went there and when i reached to meet them there i saw them sitting outside ice cold beer on the curbside squatting and when i suggested ice cold beer well i didn't quite mean it that way and thats about the 2nd most hilarious occurance last night, 2nd of course to the events that proceeded it at Rouge (ex-milieu). but before i proceed, let me justify our actions to subvert unneccessary embarrasment on our part.
'the plan', as all plans teenagers concoct, failed to fall through due to some parties falling out (i.e. Weims & gang) or some other reasons which in this case, don't apply. so planless and out about town with too much time and too little to do, our original intention of going to zouk having been axed, we really were at a loss. if you're familiar with your orchard geography, then you'll know that ice cold beer is near Rouge! which is how we ended up there. it sounded good enough- $8 entry with one free drink. who's to complain? the catch- of course theres a catch!- is that it was a NUS engine fac bash!
inside they were all crowded on the dance floor doing NUS chant and cheers, which is horrifying enough, but afterwhich they obediently sat on the dance floor to watch those retrospective videos school-spirited people are so fond of with the obligatory songs from rock pop-dom (i fail to recall the exact songs). horror of horrors, but no, it doesn't end there. when the music does start and they start dancing, well, i shan't be scathing but let me quote isaac- "I've never seen so many bad dancers in one place. Lennard, they're even worse than you when you first started!", and for those who know of my embarrasing early dance floor fiascos, well, this time, it was even worse.
as of late, i've been feeling kinda under the weather what with a cough and blocked nose and itchy eyes and today i went to see the doc and its a bit disturbing that the medicine he gave he came with large stickers on the box saying- 'Caution! Poison!'. sure if i'm 6 feet under i doubt i'd have cough or running nose or itchy eye but then being 6 feet under opens up a whole new can of worms, doesn't it? so if you see my pretty mug in the obits any time soon, well, you know what happened.
unless of course, i die during NDP, which is tomorrow and im so excited that it'll be over that i may just lose control over my bladder, but it also puts me in fear of a terrorist attack! if they bomb the place, i hope its not when i'm doing my segment. soon it'll oh so over and i'll be oh so happy and then maybe i'll stop complaining so much about NS.
and this is for the army guys- i found a shop that sold bars of prickly heat soap! can you imagine? i bought a bar and i'll get back to you if it still gives the same tingly sensation. ah. prickyl heat power. air-con in a metal tin, its heaven i tell you!
isaac called me last night and asked where was nice to chill out and i said 'hey why not go to ice cold beer' and he say 'hey why not?' so i assumed he went there and when i reached to meet them there i saw them sitting outside ice cold beer on the curbside squatting and when i suggested ice cold beer well i didn't quite mean it that way and thats about the 2nd most hilarious occurance last night, 2nd of course to the events that proceeded it at Rouge (ex-milieu). but before i proceed, let me justify our actions to subvert unneccessary embarrasment on our part.
