Alice City is an underground city that the Taisei Corporation has proposed to build in Tokyo, Japan, as building underground costs less in the now highly built-up Tokyo. The plan proposes that many industrial facilities would be better suited to having subterranean equivalents e.g. warehouses, railroads, and certain manufacturing facilities. If built, it will also contain commercial and residential spaces, which will be serviced by dedicated power and waste recycling facilities.
The initial cost of building the city is said to be $ 4 billion.
Express elevators or an extension of an underground railway system will run to the bottom level. Solar domes or atrium space eliminates any feeling of claustrophobia by those sensitive.
As some office, commercial and entertainment areas move underground more open space will become available above ground. A tenminute vertical commute may replace a two hour commuting run from Tokyo suburbs.

Underground space is ideal for any city's infrastructure from the standpoints of isolation, sound insulation and earthquake resistance. A side benefit again is the preservation of above-ground environment.
Construction costs have been studied in considerable depth, a 12floor office space (80 metres deep) would cost about $577 million and a 80-metre diameter and 60-metre-high infrastructure space placed on 110 metres underground would run about $692 million. Total cost for a city of 100,000 is estimated at $4 billion, roughly half the price of one high-priced surface acre on Tokyo's Ginza strip!

This project resists the formation of a state-engineered “Generic Empire” by inverting the skyscraper to provide a typological urban framework that cultivates difference through the coexistence and participation of multiple types and skateholders.

From National Geographic, a real house that takes after the movie UP. What strikes me as interesting is that if not for the movie, any suggestion of floating a house by balloons would be considered ludicrous. Only after the image had been planted did people consider working the details of it out. And of course it worked. Anything can, only if you try hard enough.
My point is the barriers of imagination, what we thought we could imagine and thus what we can do, is highly elastic. Much more than we might have expected otherwise

The mining city of Kiruna is the northernmost city in Sweden. Located far above the Arctic Circle, it endures one of the harshest environments on earth, and one of the most extreme conditions in terms of sunlight. From early December to early January the sun never rises, and from the end of May to mid-July the sun never sets. There is, however, a bigger problem for Kiruna. It is sinking. Mines deep underground are causing the city to subside progressively. The deeper they dig the mines, the more the city subsides. This project seeks to establish a process for gradually shifting the city to firmer ground, while maintaining a constant, critical mass. It is based on a biomimetic study of how penguins huddle in order to survive extreme cold. Just as the penguin huddle is in a state of perpetual mutation as individual penguins peal off from the front to seek sanctuary at the rear, so too here, as individual buildings begin to subside, new buildings are generated on firmer ground to the rear, thereby maintaining a constant critical mass. Individual units coalesce into larger compositions, and roads are then generated to link them. Everything is scripted in Maya Embedded Language (MEL) as an animated sequence. We could think of cities as the territorialization of processes, interdependencies and relations within the territory, which are critically addressed and controlled at various scales by different decision-making bodies, design teams and other agents in a constant process of defining the spaces we live in. These relations have to be understood as emergent form the historical and material dialectics preset in the territory, linking human activities with its environment in a time based evolving process, connecting courses of action which may happen simultaneously locally and at global scales.

I think of my abstract mark-making as a type of sign lexicon, signifier, or language for characters that hold identity and have social agency. The characters in my maps plotted, journeyed, evolved, and built civilisations. I charted, analyzed, and mapped their experience and development: their cities, their suburbs, their conflicts, and their wars. The paintings occurred in an intangible no-place: a blank terrain, an abstracted map space. As I continued to work I needed a context for the marks, the characters. By combining many types of architectural plans and drawings I tried to create a metaphoric, tectonic view of structural history. I wanted to bring my drawing into time and place
